Heating and air conditioning systems are the biggest users of energy in the home, up to 79% of the utility bill. A new furnace can save up to 50% in operating costs over a ten year old furnace. Many 1990 and earlier model furnaces have efficiencies of 70% or less. The minimum efficiency furnace that can be sold in the United States today is 78%. Furnaces are available that are up to 96% efficient.
Air conditioners may look alike, but check the SEER ratings (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). Higher SEER numbers save money. A 13 SEER rated air conditioner uses 20-23% less energy then a 10 SEER unit. 13 SEER became the minimum efficiency standard at 2006. R-22 is the most common refrigerant used in air conditioning systems. Starting in January of 2010 manufactures will no longer be able to use R-22 in any newly manufactured Air Conditioning units. The new refrigerant, ozone friendly R-410, will replace the R-22.

The evaporator coil is the indoor unit that sits on top or under the furnace to circulate cool air through your home in the summer. A refrigerant circulates through copper tubing that runs between evaporator coil, compressor and condenser. Evaporator coils, engineered to fit your specific installation environment, and manage the refrigerant to ensure maximum cooling of your home.

A Ductless Split System is a alternative to central Air conditioning and Heating system. It is very quiet and efficient, because the compressor sits on the outside. Since Ductless Mini Split Systems have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced Air systems. Ductless Split Systems deliver the unmatched comfort of a traditional split system to specific individual spaces in your home.

Electronic Air Cleaners are for better indoor air quality. Today’s homeowners are realizing that keeping a home comfortable is about more than just temperature control. The electronic air cleaner will filter out particulates as small as .01 micron, allowing it to capture smoke and some viruses. Humidifiers are independent units that add moisture directly into your ducts. For optimal comfort and health, indoor air quality experts and national studies indicate that your homes relative humidity levels should range between 40 and 50%. Humidified air feels warmer, and it helps reduce occurrences of dry skin, chapped lips, and static shocks. Proper moisture levels help lower risk of respiratory infections.

Ultraviolet Lamps can be added to an existing forced air system. Lamps can be installed either in the main supply or return duct of a central Heating and Cooling system. UV Lamps zap the mold and bacteria that can grow in the moist environment of your HVAC system. The germicidal effects of UV light cause photochemical damage to DNA and RNA within microorganisms. UV technology is used in commercial kitchens, pharmacies and hospitals to kill airborne and surface microorganisms. Now homeowners can benefit from UV products too.

One of the most important parts of a home’s comfort system is its main control—the thermostat. The thermostat tells the Heating and Cooling system when to turn on and off. Essentially a heat-activated switch, a thermostat has a temperature sensor that causes the switch to open or close as the room warms or cools.

Heating water typically consumes from 10% to 15% of a home’s total monthly energy budget. There are three common types of water heaters used in homes: storage water heaters, tank less on-demand water heaters, and instant hot-water dispensers. Storage water heaters heat water with natural gas or electricity and hold the heated water until it’s needed. Tank less on-demand water heaters very popular alternative, because they save energy by heating water as it passes through, eliminating the need for storing water at a high temperature. The third category, instant hot-water dispensers are point-of-use water heaters typically used at the kitchen sink.
